About us
In the year 2000, a group of musicians gathered together in Terminal Studios. They recorded several tracks in - what was then - the last of Jackson, Mississippi's fully equipped music recording studios. They gathered in support of two native Jacksonians, long-time friends and daughters of musician/educators. The result was a beautifully executed session that highlighted the best of the region's spirit and fortitude. Rhonda Richmond's Oshogbo Town was our first release as a label. Ojah Records then became Ojah Media Group - a home grown Mississippi company engaged in economic development and support for programs specifically designed to foster creativity and innovation in our communities and in the world.
Ojah Media Group is dedicated to the presentation, preservation, and propagation of Mississippi and the region's rich and vibrant cultural heritage. Ojah, the Yoruba word for marketplace, symbolizes the shifting paradigm in the current global economy to a more collaborative relationship between various levels of vendors, based on the traditional African model of collective cooperation.
In 2006, Rhonda Richmond paid tribute to her parents with a collection of praise songs titled Rhythm And Strings. In celebration of the release, Ojah Media Group produced the first in a series of concerts called The Unbroken Circle. A night interwoven with spirituals, Yoruba orikis, original songs, and spoken word. The Unbroken Circle Concert Series was created to support the resurgence of the Farish Street Historic District in Jackson, Mississippi.
Little by little, bit by bit, the story continues to unfold.
